Graduate Questionnaire

Laboratory of Information Media Environment

Katsutoshi Kusumoto
graduated from the Laboratory of Information Media Environment in the 2008 academic year

I was interested in visual expression. That was the main reason why I chose this laboratory where students can voluntarily research computer graphics (CG). Another reason is the professor’s attractive personality.

Q1What did you learn in the laboratory? What do you think is helpful for your current job?

I was able to learn the basic process of solving a problem by taking a certain approach, such as the PDCA cycle. That helped me a lot in the laboratory and is also helpful in doing my current job.
Tackling a problem is like doing research at university, while it means a job in society. In society, you may often have to deal with a new problem that you are not specialized in. I think it is a big help to acquire this basis as a means to deal with such situations.

Q2Why did you choose this division and this laboratory?

I was interested in visual expression. That was the main reason why I chose this laboratory where students can voluntarily research computer graphics (CG). Another reason is the professor’s attractive personality.
CG sounds flashy because of the footage people see, but actually research in this field is much different from what people imagine. It mostly involves elements of mathematics and unglamorous work. However, when images and footage are finally completed through such processes, you can enjoy the fulfillment and excitement of CG research. Through footage, you can intuitively convey the result to people who see it. That is one of the attractive points of this research.

Q3Your future goal and a message for your juniors

As a message from an engineer to junior fellows, I hope you will not only study specific fields but also get into the habit of taking on new technologies and knowledge by setting up antennas in various fields. This habit is very important for you to grow. It may not help you to get results right now, but will probably be very helpful several years later. It is important to try anyway even if it seems to feel useless. The world is brimming with information. I hope you will use it and acquire new things to expand your capacity.
