A commitment to natural and safe language processing
LML is a pioneering AI lab that merges creativity and functionality to redefine how machines understand and use natural languages.
Multidisciplinary Approach
Our research goes beyond classical NLP by combining findings from various disciplines with latest and historical achievements in the field of AI.
Dialog Processing
Naturalness of a dialog is approached on different levels, not only semantic but also pragmatic. From prosodic features to user modeling and remembering, we cover a wide scope of dialog-related topics.
Language and Knowledge Acquisition
From common sense to legal expertise, we study how machines should effectively acquire knowledge. By experimenting with semantic primes we look for closer-to-human ways of perceiving and learning the world.
Affective Computing
Machines understanding our emotions are important for our everyday life use of AI, as well as for other topics as ethics, language acquisition or humor processing. Our ML-ASK library is widely used since 2009.
Moral Machines
Since 2005 we have been working on various ethical decision making algorithms utilizing Wisdom of Crowd and approaches derived from classic schools of ethics as utilitarianism or deontology.
Humorous and Figurative Language
Creativity in language use is often problematic for machines. We work on both creating and understanding of novel metaphorical, poetic and humorous utterances.
Real-World Simulations
As the benchmarks do not mirror always changing contexts, we have been proposing solutions for home environments and robots to ensure that actions are safe and fair to all users.
Lab Policy
