Course introduction to freshmen students

We conducted a course introduction to the freshmen on Thursday, February 8th, 2024.
In this event, senior students who have already started research life introduce their research topic to the freshmen, who are selecting their course. This time is the 2nd event in this year and is an important opportunity for the freshman as they are approaching the course selection.

We held a poster exhibition, showcased an intro., real-time simulations of electromagnetic field, and conducted a demonstration of our research (display of chips and wafers of Photonic IC). Especially, we prepared a poster and electromagnetic simulations for this occasion.

* Glossary

  • Electromagnetic simulations: By solving the basic equation in electromagnetics, “Maxell’s equation”, on computers, the behaviors of electromagnetic fields are simulated. To solve the above-mentioned equations on computers, “Finite-element method (FEM),” “Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method” are well known. In this demo, we executed FDTD method in real time on a web browser.
  • Photonic IC chip: These are optical circuits integrated onto a Si chip, each about the size of thumbnail. ‘IC’ stands for integrated circuits. During our demonstration, visitors had the opportunity to observe specific optical circuit devices using a microscope. (Centerin the picture)
  • Wafer: A Si plate with disk shape, which is just before cutting the optical IC chip. (Right in the picture)
