Characteristics of the Course of Media and Network Technologies

  • Significant increase in course enrollment capacity from 30 to 49 students in AY 2024

    Hokkaido University has been selected under the top-tier category of the FY2023 Project for Strengthening University and College of Technology Functions (Support for Strengthening Functions to Secure Highly Skilled Information Professionals) by the National Institution for Academic Degrees and Quality Enhancement of Higher Education. As part of this project, the enrollment capacity of the Course of Media and Network Technologies has been significantly expanded. With the rising demand for AI and data science, this course has seen the largest increase in capacity among all courses at the University.

  • Ranked No. 1 in AI-related academic journal publications
    • The Course of Media and Network Technologies has the highest number of AI-related academic journal publications within the School of Engineering.
    • As a result of its active research efforts, the Course has produced many students who have been exempted from repaying their Japan Student Services Organization scholarship loans (based on academic performance).
  • Accepted by top journals and international conferences

    • We conduct collaborative research with organizations in various fields, including medical science (Olympus Corporation, The University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine, Hokkaido University School of Medicine, etc.), civil engineering (NEXCO East Japan, Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau, Tokyo Metro Co., Ltd., etc.), materials science (Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd., Hitachi, Ltd., etc.), planetary science (JAXA, Japan Weather Association, etc.), and sports science (Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo, etc.).

    The Course of Media and Network Technologies has secured one of the highest levels of collaborative research funding among all schools at the University, enabling it to offer an outstanding research and education environment where students can acquire the practical skills essential for their future careers.

  • Acquisition of grants and fellowships by graduate students

    Due to the increasing demand for digitally skilled professionals with AI and data science expertise, our master’s students engage in research thanks to grants from various businesses. Furthermore, nearly all our doctoral students are eligible for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science’s Research Fellowship for Young Scientists, scholarship grants, or other fellowships, receiving generous financial support.
