The curriculum of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology is designed for students to become researchers or engineers with a wide perspective and flexible ideas through systematic learning in two specialized fields.

In the Master's course, the two specialized fields are categorized by subject:

1. 1). Major subjects: Subjects in students' divisions
2. 2). Minor subjects: Subjects outside students' divisions

1. In addition to the subjects above, common subjects in this graduate school are available as minor subjects.
2. Since many research fields in the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology share boundaries with those of the Graduate School of Engineering, students can take subjects in a division of the Graduate School of Engineering as minor subjects in the Master's course if their supervisors approve. Students can also take subjects that are open to all graduate schools of Hokkaido University as minor subjects with the approval of supervisors.
3. In the Doctoral course, students take four subjects in a division outside the major or minor divisions taken in the Master's course to further broaden their perspectives. However, the course structure is flexible to enable students to select their subjects. In addition, students can take subjects in their divisions if they enroll directly into this graduate school for the Doctoral course, such as those from other schools or those entering from the workforce.

Master's course

Students must earn a total of 30 credits or more and satisfy the following requirements:

1. 1. Major subjects

   Acquisition of 16 credits or more for lectures in the students' divisions
   Acquisition of 10 credits for laboratory seminar

2. 2. Minor subjects

   Acquisition of 4 credits or more for lectures in a division outside the major in this graduate school. However, if supervisors approve, students can instead take four credits or more for special topic lectures in a division of the Graduate School of Engineering or graduate school common subjects in fields comprised of multiple subjects.

   Students are free to take subjects outside their major and minor as non-obligatory subjects with the approval of teachers in charge of the subjects.
   Such subjects include special lectures held in each division, lectures held in other graduate schools and educational departments, as well as graduate school common subjects (excluding those taken as minor subjects) and subjects in the graduate schools of other domestic and foreign universities.
   Please note that designated registrations must be submitted regarding (i) and (ii) stated above.

   Submission of registrations and the changes of subject selection
   Please submit the registration by the designated date in late April. Students can change some subjects if their initial plan changes over the course of the research, or if they are caught in unavoidable circumstances such as conflicting schedules. In such cases, designated applications for subject changes should be submitted by late April for the first semester and late October for the second semester with the approval of students' supervisors.
   Details such as deadlines and addresses are to be posted on bulletin boards.

Doctoral course

Students must earn a total of 10 credits or more and satisfy the following requirements:

1. 1. Lectures in a division of this graduate school

   Acquisition of 8 credits or more for lectures in a division (excluding the major, in principle) of this graduate school with the approval of the students' supervisors. Regarding subjects in other graduate schools that are approved by supervisors, up to four credits are allowed to be certified as credits for the completion of the course.
   Please note that designated registrations must be submitted.

2. 2. Special Research

   Acquisition of two credits in the students' divisions under the guidance of supervisors.
   Students are free to take subjects other than those stated in (i) above as non-obligatory subjects with the approval of teachers in charge of the subjects.
