Have I been able to pursue a meaningful research? How is my life in the laboratory? Do I enjoy it? These are the questions I will try to answer with this short article, which I do hope that it will help any reader who interested in our university to find out if it suit your personality and your goal, or not. First, I will briefly introduce my current research theme and then talk about my research and everyday life experience at my laboratory.

Firstly, I’m in the field of Computer Graphics. It plays a major role in the world’s evolution. Computer graphics is a field within Computer sciences. It involves the study of the processes required to produce images or visual content using computational techniques. It revolutionizes the way in which a human interacts with a machine because it makes a computer key in the rapid advancement of many different studies today. Recently there has been an increase in activity within the field of computer graphics research, especially in real-time rendering, which is the field which involves study about how to produce images in an interactive rate. It is the most tremendously active research field within the study of computer graphics. One of the major unsolvable problems at present is real-time global illumination or light bouncing calculation. The ultimate goal of computer graphics is always the reproduction of the real world. However, the real world of lighting is excessively complex, it can light a surface, absorb and then reflect it numerous times inside our world. We can calculate direct lighting easily, yet it is still virtually impossible to compute indirect lighting at an interactive rate using the current generation of hardware. Hence, if we could calculate indirect lighting at an interactive rate, we could bring computer graphics incredibly close to the real world like never before. There are many researches which have attempted to solve the global illumination problem but, unfortunately, we still have not been able to reach real-time calculations using a standard computer yet. The benefits that come from solving this problem are important for any interactive application industry. And currently I’m working on trying to find that solution.

Secondly, I’m a member of Information Media Environment Laboratory, which has a wide variety research fields and topics from Electronic to Computer Graphics. We have three professors, who are the experts in their own field. Currently there are 20 students doing their best researching in our lab. We were separated into two groups based on an interested field. There is no fixed time for students to be at the lab, because our works usually can be done almost anywhere. However most of us are around the lab all-day mostly doing our study and socializing between the members and what I found fascinating is the professors are always presented, even though we are at the separated rooms they usually come visit us. There are many meeting schedules in our lab. We have weekly seminar meeting, which everyone must participate. In this seminar, two or three members present their progress and receive comments for the others. After that we might have English seminar, which aim to provide a chance for the Japanese students to practice their public speaking and English skill, Study seminar, which intended to supply the members with various knowledge, or Network seminar, which teach the members how to maintenance the laboratory’s network. Also we have a monthly meeting for each research group where everyone need to present their works instead of just two or three persons like weekly seminar meeting. As you can see, our lab has a lot of interesting activity and flexible rules, which make it comfortable for us to do the research without losing track of it.

To summarize, I am working on real-time global illumination in the field of Computer Graphics, which is very difficult. However due to the nature of my laboratory, it help me be able to focus and put all of my effort into my study. I hope this help you guys to decide what to do in the future and I wish you all to be able to obtain what you are working on. Good luck.
